Brief

The builder “An Environmental Design” came to us because he wanted to put a sustainable kitchen into a house that he was renovating.  The house was being renovated using environmentally friendly principles and he was keen to include an environmentally friendly kitchen.

Once work had commenced on the kitchen, we met with the house owner regarding additional work.  The owner was very excited to find out that we were able to offer bamboo as a material as she loves bamboo.  We were then commissioned to design and install bookshelves, cupboards and office bench space.  The office is also used as a spare bedroom when her grandchildren come to stay, so the joinery installed needed to work with the room’s use of both office and children’s bedroom.

Finished Product

The finished kitchen is simple, but elegant.  Whilst the design was given to us by “An Environmental Design” we tweaked it slightly to ensure the end result was more user friendly.

By incorporating several drawer banks, the storage space is easy to use and the dove-tailed drawers and other hardware used ensure the drawers are sturdy enough to hold crockery whilst the soft-close drawer mechanisms ensure the crockery is safe because the drawer closes slowly. 

As the client was concerned about the look of the microwave a tilt and slide door was installed to cover the microwave.  The door tilts and slides on top of the microwave, giving full access to the microwave without restrictions.  The door helps to minimise dust collecting in the microwave space whilst also ensuring there is adequate ventilation for the microwave when it is in use.

The bins are located under the sink (not shown in the pictures) and we have worked with the plumber to ensure the space is maximised for use, rather than being taken over by the plumbing.

Kitchen Materials:

• Recycled Silvertop ash doors.
• Plantation hoop pine cabinetry.
• Granite bench-top.

The office has been designed for both practicality and simplicity.  The office benches can be folded down when the room is converted to a bedroom and the bookshelves with cupboard space underneath ensure there is ample room for storage of books and other items best stored in cupboards.

• Solid Natural Bamboo ply.
